• Fuller Craft Museum Presents Michael James: Studio
   Quilts 1977 - Present

Michael James, the artist widely credited with helping to make the quilt an art form, will be honored in a retrospective of his career at Fuller Craft Museum May 14 - August 28, 2005.   Over twenty of James' pieced and quilted fabric constructions, including current works involving the use of digitally manipulated photographs printed onto fabric, will be on exhibit as part of Michael James: Studio Quilts 1977 - Present .

A master craftsman and pioneer in the field of quilt making, Michael James' colorful creations are rooted in the past, but distinctly headed for the future.   James' quilts with their wild patterns, vibrant colors, and tendencies to break out of the archetypal grid reflect an innovative and exciting approach to a centuries-old art form.   His use of experimental techniques and materials while paying homage to tradition has led him to become one of America's most acclaimed contemporary art quilters.

Trained as a painter, James turned to quilting as a way to relax while working on his Master of Fine Arts as Rochester Institute of Technology.   Eventually, he became so involved in quilting that it became a passion and then a career.

Michael James is Ardis James Professor of the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he teaches textile design. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Arts and Design, NY, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, Washington, DC, and the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, NC.   He is also the author of several how-to books on quilting that are considered classic guidebooks for quilters including "The Quiltmaker's Handbook" and "The Second Quiltmaker's Handbook."
